Common After-sales Problem Solutions for xPON ONU: What to Do When the Optical Signal Indicator Light Stays Red?
2025-05-07

In today's digital age, the internet has become an indispensable part of our lives and work. For networks adopting xPON technology, the stable operation of the ONU (Optical Network Unit), as a crucial terminal device, is of vital importance. Among various after-sales issues, the "optical signal indicator light staying red" is a relatively common problem, and we will provide a detailed explanation for you today.

I. What Does It Mean When the Optical Signal Indicator Light Stays Red?

When you notice that the optical signal indicator light on the xPON ONU device stays red, it indicates that the device is not receiving a normal optical signal. In simple terms, there is a problem with the optical fiber link from the operator's equipment room to your home or office, which prevents the normal transmission of data and thus affects your internet usage.

II. Common Causes of the Optical Signal Indicator Light Staying Red

1. Loose or Damaged Optical Fiber Cable

If the optical fiber connector is not properly inserted into the port of the ONU device, or if it becomes loose due to accidental pulling during daily use, the transmission of the optical signal will be blocked. In addition, if the optical fiber is squeezed, bent by external forces, or even scratched by sharp objects, it may cause the internal fiber core to break, making it impossible to conduct the optical signal normally.

2. Optical Module Failure

The optical module inside the ONU device is responsible for receiving and converting optical signals. If the optical module malfunctions, such as aging or damage due to overheating, even if the optical fiber cable is in good condition, the device cannot correctly receive and process the optical signal, resulting in the optical signal indicator light staying red.

3. Operator-side Issues

Sometimes, the problem does not lie with the user-side equipment or cable. Malfunctions of relevant equipment in the operator's equipment room, maintenance work on the optical fiber link, or even network configuration adjustments may all lead to the user-side ONU failing to receive a normal optical signal.

III. How Can We Solve This Problem?

1. Check the Connection of the Optical Fiber Cable

First, you can check the connection between the optical fiber cable and the ONU device by yourself. Gently pull out the optical fiber connector and check if there is dust or dirt on the end face. If there is, you can gently wipe it with a clean dust-free cloth. Then, re-insert the connector into the optical fiber interface of the ONU device, making sure it is firmly plugged in until you hear a "click" sound. If there are multiple optical fiber cables, carefully confirm which one is connected to the ONU to avoid incorrect insertion. During the inspection, also pay attention to whether the optical fiber cable has obvious bends or damages. If you find that the outer sheath of the optical fiber is damaged or there are obvious bends, do not attempt to fix it by yourself and contact a professional immediately.

2. Restart the ONU Device

After confirming that the optical fiber connection is normal, you can try restarting the ONU device. Turn off the device's power, wait for 10 - 15 seconds, and then turn the power back on. During the restart process, the device will automatically attempt to re-establish the optical signal connection. Sometimes, temporary device failures or software glitches can be resolved by restarting.
